![]() ![]() TurboTax Self-Employed adds photo import for 1099-K forms (but we saw only the opportunity to import using a digital file). ![]() And if you have a business with associated deductions, that’s covered in the Self-Employed product, which now looks for over 500 possible credits and deductions and uses machine learning and AI (according to TurboTax) to uncover deductions for your industry. But Schedules D (investments) and E (rentals and royalties) - including rental income, roboinvesting, and cryptocurrency transactions - require the Premier tier (although oddly, the Deluxe version allowed us to enter crypto transactions without prompting us to upgrade, as it did for stock investments). If you have a 1099-NEC form (the new independent contractor income form) or investments, you may be able to use Deluxe. If you have a 1099-K from selling personal items or as a hobby, you can use Deluxe, but not if you have self-employed income. If you’re using the Live Full Service tier, you can use TurboTax’s MyDocs cloud service, through which you can share relevant tax documents for review (you can also add your docs there to collect them in one secure place, even if not using a tax pro to do your taxes for you). TurboTax has long let you import data from financial institutions and from Intuit QuickBooks, but not its consumer-centric Mint (TurboTax desktop handles Quicken imports as well). Intuit TurboTax Deluxe 2022 review: Features All other TurboTax Live Assisted and Live Full Service options cost $64 to file a state return, up $15 from last year. TurboTax Live Assisted Basic, which includes live support, includes one state filing. That's pricier than H&R Block, which charges $37 per do-it-yourself state return. State tax filing costs $59 per state on all standard do-it-yourself TurboTax online products, also up $10 from last year (a free state return comes with TurboTax Free online). Intuit TurboTax Deluxe 2022 review: State filing Small businesses get a boost with the new TurboTax Live Full Service Business Tax, which handles LLCs, S-corps and partnerships. TurboTax’s software dynamically adjusts for its military product, as opposed to having a separate “product” (as TaxAct does for its military tax service). (Live services are not an option with the downloaded versions.)Īctive duty and reserve military users can file federal and state taxes for free, using a link via the website’s menu. The downloadable product lets you electronically file, or you can print out and mail your return. If you prefer to keep your tax data local instead of using an online service, Intuit continues to offer four varieties of download-to-own TurboTax, at the same prices as last year (Basic, $50 Deluxe, $80 Premier, $110 and Home & Business, $120). Also, you can see up front what Live Full Service costs before you start H&R Block’s interface still obscures the pricing for its full virtual tax prep option online. We like TurboTax’s price transparency for its Live Full Service product. If you qualify for the Basic Live Assisted Service, you can get this service free if you file before March 31. TurboTax Live Full Service’s prices are a more significant step up from Live Assisted (new name, same as last year’s “Live” tier), but still a fairly reasonable expense when you consider you’re getting a fully virtual service tax pro handling your taxes - and they now handle your taxes live on the call with you. ![]() ![]() ![]() Vimeo sets this cookie which is essential for the website to play video functionality. ![]() She says that the best time to start is early morning. It’s exhilarating, and highly productive, to tackle a big, one-time goal, and a clean slate is powerful-it’s also true that we can get a lot done, by doing a little bit each day over a long term. She suggests going big and doing a giant purge rather than tackling a little clutter each day.īut, as I write about in Better Than Before, some people like to start big, and some like to start small. On the other hand, when Elizabeth and I talked about “the challenge of switching bags” in episode 55 of our podcast Happier, many listeners let me know that they followed Marie Kondo’s suggestion, with great success. This would not be a good use of my time or energy, and I don’t think it would achieve anything. She suggests taking everything out of your handbag, every day. Another person can help with the grunt work, give advice about what to keep or discard, and can make a chore more fun. For many people, it’s helpful to have a clutter-clearing partner. Know yourself.ģ. She advises clearing clutter alone and in quiet.įor me, that’s very true. It’s true, though, that for many people, “spark joy” has been a revelation. I find it exhausting even to contemplate having an emotional reaction to so many common objects. But I don’t think I can realistically expect to have a joyful relationship with every item in my apartment. She recommends asking yourself whether an item “sparks joy.” This is a terrific question, and can be very helpful. She advises having a joyful relationship with every item you own. In my experience, this can easily become overwhelming and lead to more clutter that lasts a long time, because people bite off more than they can chew. ![]() She advises that that if you’re cleaning your coats, take out every single coat, if you’re clearing your bookshelves, take out every book. She advises putting every item in a category on the floor as the first step in clearing clutter. Here are the 7 main concepts where I disagree with Marie Kondo:ġ. (Though at the same time, she shows a strong feeling of animism, which I found intriguing.) But some people are abundance lovers, and some people like to start small, and some people are marathoners, and some people have strong emotional attachments to possessions. Which I love! Which makes the book much more interesting! But what works for Marie Kondo isn’t necessarily a great guide for what works for another person.įrom her own description of herself, she makes it clear that she’s a simplicity-lover, who likes to take big steps, who’s a sprinter, and a person who who doesn’t feel strong emotional attachment to possessions. And here’s the thing: you read five pages of this book, and you know that Marie Kondo is an extreme, idiosyncratic personality. (You can read more about this in Better Than Before, in the chapter about “Distinctions.”)Īnd Marie Kondo does argue for the one best way. You like lots of abundance I like simplicity. You exercise in the afternoon I exercise first thing in the morning. We can all learn from each other, absolutely, but there’s no one way to achieve anything. Just because something works for you-or Marie Kondo-doesn’t mean that it will work for me. There is no magic, one-size-fits-all solution. ![]() I also have some profound disagreements with Marie Kondo.Īs I write in The Happiness Project, and Happier at Home, and Better Than Before, I’ve come to believe deeply that we all must find the way to happiness and good habits that’s right for us. And I found it thought-provoking, and I got some great clutter-clearing tips from the “KonMari method.” ![]() So I was eager to read Marie Kondo’s blockbuster bestseller, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up. I feel this phenomenon in my own life it exhilarates me in practice and fascinates me in theory. For me-and for most people- outer order contributes to inner calm. ![]() ![]() In 1883, after spending several summers as renters in East Hampton, Thomas and Mary decided to build a home in the village. Thomas Moran alongside the fence of his East Hampton home and studio. Here was a place in which he could live, breathe, socialize and interact with other artists -while painting a wide array of landscapes and seascapes. “I think he quickly realized the kind of life he could live there.” Anderson, chief curator of American and British art at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. “I think he found a place that really spoke to him and Mary,” says Nancy K. “East Hampton so resembled a peaceful English village that it won Thomas’ heart at once, and filled him with nostalgia,” wrote biographer Thurman Wilkins. For Thomas, who was born in Lancashire, England, it all seemed familiar. The Morans marveled at what they found: They were awed by the elms, chestnut and maple trees that shaded Main Street charmed by the flocks of geese and cows that roamed the lanes around the village and dazzled by the sun-dappled fields. Ruth recalled the “sweet smell of fields, of growing things with the salt downy fog dripping from the blackness that was East Hampton’s night.” The Morans’ daughter, Ruth, later recalled the last leg of the journey, from the rail terminus at Bridgehampton in a stagecoach - “Seven sandy, woodsy miles in a knife-box stage, smelling of leather and hay” - and her initial impressions of the village, in which they arrived at dusk. It consisted of a single grassy street, around which were clustered a number of old saltbox houses. A PLACE TO LIVE AND PAINTįounded two centuries earlier, the village of East Hampton had a population of roughly 600 at the time of the Morans’ arrival. In the summer of 1879, Moran and his wife, Scottish-born illustrator Mary Nimmo Moran, rented rooms in a local boarding house and began to explore the pastoral beauty and oceanic majesty of the Hamptons. Thanks to the enthusiastic reports of The Tile Club, however, the painter of the West was now turning his gaze East. Some of these images - including his seven-foot-high, 12-foot-long masterpiece, “Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone” - were purchased by the federal government and provided the impetus for legislation that would eventually produce the National Park System. ![]() Moran’s paintings of Yellowstone, the Grand Tetons and other now-familiar Western landmarks were also viewed by members of Congress and President Ulysses S. Thomas Moran's "Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone." The magazine thought a first-hand report on this place by the intrepid Tile Clubbers would prove entertaining.īy clicking Sign up, you agree to our privacy policy. A handful of artists and writers had started visiting the area in the years before the Civil War and word was filtering back about its many charms. The members of the club had been encouraged by Scribner’s, a popular literary and arts magazine, to take a sort of artistic field trip to the boondocks of Long Island. Hence, the name of the association they had formed: Part professional organization, part college fraternity, it was dubbed “The Tile Club.”īut they weren’t looking for ceramic tiles to paint in the Hamptons. ![]() ![]() The group of 11 shared something in common: They were New York City-based painters and illustrators with a common interest in decorative arts - pottery, glass, textiles. They had come from New York City to visit the sleepy, rural outpost of East Hampton because they’d heard about its powerful natural attractions. On a spring day in 1878, a group of men clad in fashionable London walking boots and carrying sketch pads, easels and cases filled with paints and brushes ambled off a train at Bridgehampton, then the easternmost stop on the Long Island Rail Road. ![]() ![]() I've been using this nearly every day since I got it. All in all? A good machine with a few quirks I’d prefer differently but would recommend. Kind of annoying to deal with when all you want is a quick cup of coffee on the morning and the system makes you clean something first (that you haven’t even used). Very simple to use! It also makes you clean the milk tube every few uses even if the milk tube hasn’t been used. Seems like a lot of wasted water and you have to remove the water trap more often to pour out. It also seems to leak a lot of water in the water tray which is fine, but my old one never did that unless it was cleaning the system at shutoff. There is a whole to pour water into the container so you don’t have to remove the water tank but then you have to dirty up a giant pitcher that holds a fair amount of water every time. A simple beep or message notifying you the machine needs water is all that’s needed. It also beeps at you the entire t ime you take the water container out to fill it. Not a big deal, but is a little annoying early in the morning when people are still asleep. I will say it’s much noisier than our last espresso/coffee machine which was a Jura Ena. The machine is super easy to use, and makes good coffee, albeit very strong in flavor. I suggest you wait for it to go on sale as I bought mine for $649. You may be fine just by setting the machine to extra hot in the settings mode. So after it is dispensed I put the cup in the microwave for 20 seconds. even at the hottest setting I am not satisfied with the temperature of a cup of cappuccino. Then I hit the button for a glass of frothed milk, for a nice big cup. Here's a trick I use, I take a 12 ounce mug and hit the button for a double espresso. This process is twice as long as a regular froth cleaning and is necessary. About every 10 cups of cappuccino you should go into the programming mode and do a stream clean of the milk frother with hot water as we did before. This means removing the outer part of the milk frother and sliding out the entire chrome tray. Every 8 or 9 cups you have to empty the used coffee clumps from inside the machine. I say to catch the water in a jar so you don't have to empty the water catch tray as often. Put the milk hose into a water bottle full of hot water and a jar under the milk spout on the machine and let it rinse. Every time you turn on off or on the machine will ask if you need to rinse the milk system. Increase coffee strength to 3 beans and milk to 70% and your standard coffee cup will be filled with a tasty cappuccino. ![]() You will have to go into programming mode to set it so that it gives you a decen t size cup full. Right out of the box, after you fill it with coffee beans and water, then drop the hose into the milk, it will make you a coffee that puts Starbucks to shame. OK, so here is a real unvarnished review by a real purchaser. Specific Uses For Product: Espresso, Mocha, Latte, Cappuccino Special Feature: Integrated Coffee Grinder, Cup Warmer, Milk Frother, Auto Clean Function, Programmable
